Circle of Jean-Jacques Henner, French 1829-1905- Two nude women in a wooded landscape; oil on canvas, 38 x 46 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Henner studied in Paris, first under Neoclassical painters Michel Martin Drolling (1786-1851) and François-Édouard Picot (1786-1868), and later at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1858. He went on to enjoy great success amongst contemporaries, exhibiting regularly at the Salon, with a number of his paintings subsequently purchased for the collection of the Musée d'Orsay. Henner was best known for his highly atmospheric nudes and enigmatic portraits, typically, like the present work, executed with a characteristically dark colour palette, eerie, moonlit atmosphere.
