Léon Germain Pelouse, French 1838-1891- A carriage in a landscape, under cloudy skies; oil on canvas, signed 'G. Pelouse' (lower left), 31.4 x 55.5 Provenance: The Collection of Roger and Suzanne Jouve. The Estate of John Byrne (1945-2025). Note: Pelouse's atmospheric landscapes exhibit an affinity with those of older contemporaries, including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) and Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878). Pelouse trained as an amateur artist, and only began painting professionally from the age of twenty-seven, when his painting 'Les Environs de Précy' was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1865 to public acclaim. The present view of a rural landscape under dramatic skies is typical of Pelouse's oeuvre, with strikingly similar works selling at Sotheby's, London, on 11 July 2007, lot 273 (£1,560), at Millon, Paris on 7 February 2017, lot 253 (€4,126), and at Koller, Switzerland, on 28 September 2018, lot 3214 (£3,435).
