Sir George Reid, RSA, Scottish 1841-1913- Boats on the shore, with birds nesting beside; oil on canvas, signed with monogram and dated '1871' (lower left), 17.5 x 35 cm. Provenance: with The Fine Art Society Ltd., Edinburgh. The Estate of John Byrne (1945-2025). Exhibited: Edinburgh, Fine Art Society, July 1979, no. 6450. Note: Reid studied in Paris under Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893) before travelling to The Hague, where he worked with Jozef Israëls (1824-1911). This variety of influences undoubtedly informed the versatility of Reid's output, encompassing portraiture, still lifes, and landscapes. The present tranquil coastal scene recalls a work by Reid which sold at Christie's, London, on 7 March 2002, lot 46 (£4,112), as well as his 'Coast sketch' in the collection of Kirkcaldy Galleries [KIRMG:22.1].
