Edward William Stott, ARA, British 1859-1918- An expectant cat; pastel on buff paper, 18.9 x 17.9 cm. Provenance: with The Fine Art Society Ltd., London. The Estate of John Byrne (1945-2025). Exhibited: London, The Fine Art Society, 2 April 1969, no. 6711. Note: Stott was a leading figure of the rural Sussex artist colony at Amberley, and was renowned for his atmospheric and intimate portrayals of rural subjects. He trained in the Paris studio of Carolus Duran (1837-1917), and it was during his time in France that he became familiar with the rural realism of Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) and became influenced by the works of the Impressionists.
