Walter Greaves, British 1846-1930- View of boats on a river with a bridge beyond, possibly Old Battersea Bridge over the Thames; black ink and wash on paper, signed 'W. Greaves' (lower right), 16.7 x 23.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present subject is absolutely typical of Greaves' output, with the artist clearly fascinated by the river Thames, upon which he worked as a boatman, rowing his friend and future teacher, James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), along the river as the latter made sketches of his surroundings. Indeed, strikingly similar works by Greaves include his view of 'Old Battersea Bridge with sail barges' which sold at Duke's, Dorchester, on 29 January 2026, lot 109 (£1,800 hammer).
