James Abbott McNeill Whistler, RBA, American 1834-1903- Soupe à trois sous; etching and drypoint on laid paper, signed 'Whistler' (within the plate, upper centre), 15 x 22.2 cm. Provenance: with Faustus Galleries Ltd., London [E.2297]. Private Collection, UK. Note: The title of this print translates as soup for three pennies, indicating that the men shown are sitting in a cheap café or bar (notes left by Whistler suggest it is the Café des Pieds-Humides ('Café of the Wet Feet') in Paris). Soon after making this etching, Whistler moved to London, took lodgings south of Tower Bridge, then recorded a similar scene in an etching titled 'Longshore Men'. The artist appears at the left, looking towards the viewer. The signature, etched high on the otherwise bare wall, reads like a fragment of graffiti. A version of this print is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York [83.1.21].
