Antonia de Bañuelos Thorndike, Spanish c.1856-c.1921- Portrait of a lady, seated half-length, wearing historical dress with blue feathers in her hair, and holding a fan; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'A. de Bañuelos / August 1887' (upper right), 32.5 x 25 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Antonia de Bañuelos Thorndike, also known as Marquesa de Alcedo, was a Spanish painter who lived and worked primarily in Paris, where she trained under Charles Joshua Chaplin (1825-1891), who heavily influenced the former's oeuvre. The present work is a typical example of Bañuelos's portraits of elegant ladies in elaborate dress, as in her depiction of Lucy Ellen Towneley in the collection of the Towneley Hall Art Gallery [BURGM:paoil197], as well as another portrait of a lady which sold at Millon, Paris, on 15 September 2023, lot 47 (€7,000 hammer).
