William Christian Symons, British 1845-1911- Portrait of a child with red hair, wearing a blue shirt; oil on paper, signed with initials 'W.C.S.' (lower left), and inscribed 'Mark Lawitt[?] Esp[?] / August 2 1891' (lower right), 19 x 14.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Symons studied at Lambeth Art School and briefly at the Royal Academy, where he won a silver medal in 1866. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, as well as the New English Art Club and Institute of Painters in Oil. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1881, but left the society alongside James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) in 1888. From 1899 he undertook mosaic decoration for Westminster Cathedral. The present work is characteristic of his dreamy, expressive portraits and genre scenes of children, recalling a charming work depicting Little Boy Blue and Red Riding Hood which sold at Bellmans on 25 March 2026, lot 1657 (£2,300 hammer).
