André Henri Dargelas, French 1828-1906- A boy standing in a snowy street, holding a basket; oil on panel, signed 'Dargelas' (lower left), 39.1 x 30.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Dargelas studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under François-Édouard Picot (1786-1868), and eventually settled in Ecouen, home to an artist's colony whose members included Paul Constant Soyer (1823-1903) and Pierre Édouard Frère (1819-1886). The present work is a typical example of Dargelas's charming genre scenes, often depicting children playing or exploring snowy streets, as in a much larger composition by the artist which sold at Christie's, London, on 14 June 2006, lot 176 (£45,600), and another which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 11 January 1999, lot 315 ($14,950).
