Lionel Dalhousie Robertson Edwards, British 1878-1966- The Barle Valley from Winsford Hill; pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, signed and dated 'Lionel Edwards 1928' (lower right), 49.5 x 74 cm. ARR. Provenance: with The Tryon Gallery Ltd., London. Note: Following the war, Edwards became known for his sporting art, particularly hunting scenes. An accomplished artist and keen hunter, he depicted the movement of horses and hounds with considerable precision. He also illustrated numerous books and periodicals devoted to country life and sporting pursuits, and authored several books on hunting and shooting. He became a member of the Royal Institute in 1927 and exhibited regularly at Rowland Ward’s, as well as holding exhibitions at the Tryon Gallery in 1961, 1964 and 1970. Red deer have been hunted on Exmoor since Norman times, when the area was designated a Royal Forest. In the present work, the hunting party can be seen in the distance, approaching the stag in the foreground. A comparable oil by Edwards, depicting the Devon and Somerset Staghounds in the same setting of the Barle Valley, was sold at Cheffins on 21 September 2022, lot 47 (£24,000 hammer).
