Julius Adam II, German 1852-1913- Best friends; oil on panel, signed indistinctly (lower right), 14.1 x 20 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 16 July 1991, lot 161 (£2,989). Private Collection, UK. Note: Adam was known as ‘Cats Adam’ or ‘Katzen-Adam’, as his oeuvre consisted largely of charming depictions of cats. He belonged to the prominent Adam family of Munich artists and studied under Michael Echter (1812-1879) and Wilhelm von Diez (1839-1907) at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. He began producing his successful cat paintings in 1882, and their international popularity somewhat overshadowed his wider oeuvre. The present work is comparable to other charming examples of his cat paintings, including works which sold at Lempertz, Cologne, on 16 November 2024, lot 2417 (€3,276), and Neumeister, Munich, on 4 December 2019, lot 249 (€6,985).
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
