Cuthbert Edmund Swan, Irish 1870-1931- A tiger; oil on canvas, signed 'G.E.SWAN' (lower right), bears label for Frank A. Knight, London, attached to the reverse of the frame, 31 x 41 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 26 March 1991, lot 41 (£2,577 hammer). Private Collection, UK. Note: Cuthbert Edmund Swan was born in Ireland and trained in painting at the famous Académie Julian in Paris. He specialised in wild animals, mainly lions, tigers, and leopards, perhaps as a result of his father's influence: John Macallan Swan (1846-1910), painter and sculptor, spent time at the London Zoo drawing its animals, showing particular interest, like his son would later do, in big cats. The present painting is a fantastic example of this. Swan is known to have travelled throughout India before settling in London, where he became a teacher of drawing at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, now known as Central Saint Martins, and exhibited numerous times at the Royal Academy, at the Royal Society of Oil Painters, and at the Salon in Paris. His work is held in several museums across the UK. A watercolour version of the present lot is held at Llandudno Museum, Wales [inv. LLDMG:1983.39], dated 1922.
