Follower of Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA, British 1803-1902- Cattle in a landscape; oil on canvas, 45 x 58 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to be inspired by the compositions of Sidney Cooper. Sidney Cooper was a prolific artist, and arguably the pre-eminent British cattle painter of the 19th century. After initially working in the shop of a coach painter and as a scenery painter, Sidney Cooper travelled to Brussels in 1827, where he encountered the work of Eugène Verboeckhoven (1798-1881), an experience which had an immense influence on Sidney Cooper's own subsequent approach. The present scene, depicting cattle within a landscape, is highly reminiscent of Cooper’s compositions and recalls works such as examples which sold at Dreweatts, Newbury on 10 June 2026, lot 234 (£1,600 hammer), and at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 19 February 2026, lot 444 (£1,800 hammer).
