Henri de Beul, Belgian 1845-1900- Chickens in a barn; oil on board, signed and dated ' H. De Beul / 1866' (lower left), 26.4 x 38.1 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: De Beul studied at the Academy of Dendermonde and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, and was also a pupil of his elder brother, Laurent De Beul (1841-1872). His oeuvre focused on animal and farmyard scenes. He worked in the plein-air tradition associated with the Dendermonde School and was influenced by Franz Courtens (1854-1943), its leading figure. The present work is typical of De Beul’s farmyard scenes and recalls examples sold at Bonhams Skinner, Marlborough, on 18 September 2025, lot 272 ($512), and Christie’s, London, on 27 April 2006, lot 2700 (£840).
