Prudent Louis Leray, French 1820-1879- Feeding the ducks; oil on panel, signed 'L. Leray' (lower right), 27.2 x 21.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: After studying as a scholarship student at the college in Nantes, Leray entered the city’s École des Beaux-Arts. A pupil of Paul Delaroche (1797-1856), he exhibited at the Salon from 1844 and became known for his genre paintings. The present work is typical of his charming farmyard and genre scenes, and is comparable to one sold at Christie’s, London, 9 July 2010, lot 321 (£2,000). Leray frequently depicted figures alongside animals in outdoor settings, as seen in another work which sold at Sotheby’s, New York, 23 October 2007, lot 253 ($55,000).
