Frederick Albert Slocombe, British 1847-1920- The Language of Flowers; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed 'Fred Slocombe' (lower right), 47.2 x 32 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Frederick Albert Slocombe was born into a family of artists and lived in North London most of his life. He is primarily known as a landscape painter, but was also an accomplished printmaker, etching compositions originally designed by other artists, as is the case of Slocombe's Green Pastures and Still Waters, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art in New York [inv. 2003.211], after a landscape by Benjamin Williams Leader. However, the most accomplished and refined group of works by the artist are a series of depictions of women in luxurious Roman or Greek interiors, wearing draped dresses and often surrounded by flowers, of which the present work is a typical example. They are reminiscent of John William Godward (1861-1922) or Albert Joseph Moore's (1841-1893) work.
