Narcisse-Virgile Díaz de la Peña, French 1807-1876- Figures in a glade; oil on canvas, signed 'N. Diaz' (lower left), 24.5 x 16.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Díaz began his career at the Sèvres porcelain studios before turning to painting. He became known for Orientalist subjects and landscapes, particularly scenes of the Fontainebleau Forest and Barbizon. Influenced by Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867), he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1851. The present work is typical of his dreamy forest scenes, depicting a young woman flanked by two shadowy figures.
