Circle of Narcisse Berchère, French 1819-1891- A caravan at rest in the desert; oil on canvas, bears indistinct signature (lower left), 22.4 x 36 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Berchère was best-known for his Orientalist subjects, which were undoubtedly informed by his extensive travels through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East over the course of his career. Berchère was friends with figures such as Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), and Léon Belly (1827-1877), crossing the Sinai desert with Belly in 1856. The present work is highly reminiscent of Berchère's Middle Eastern scenes, typically executed with loose brushstrokes and a light colour palette which evokes the hot and hazy atmosphere of the desert. Similar works, for example, include a work which sold at Horta, Brussels, on 21 March 2022, lot 83, or another which sold at Potomack, Virginia, on 4 October 2023, lot 1022.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
