Tristram James Ellis, British 1844-1922- Egypt; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed, inscribed, and dated 'Tristram Ellis / Egypt 1895' (lower left), 52 x 23 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The son of a mathematician, Tristram James Ellis excelled in mathematics and applied sciences while growing up and studying. He trained at King's College as an engineer, and after a few years working in railways and engineering, he decided to abandon his career to dedicate all his time to painting. Early on he started exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and shortly after he moved to Paris to study under Léon Bonnat (1833-1922), who became his friend and mentor. In the late 1870s Ellis started travelling: Cyprus, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon. The sketches he executed during his travels were an enormous commercial success. In the 1880s and 1890s he returned to Egypt, he visited Greece, where King George I would acquire some of his works, and the Arctic. The present lot was painted during one of his trips to Egypt, in 1895.
