John Varley, Jnr., British 1850-1933- Dhows on the Nile; watercolour, signed 'John - Varley - ' (lower left), 50.4 x 74.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: John Varley Junior was the grandson of John Varley (1778-1842), and the son of Albert Fleetwood (1804-1876). Varley Jnr. travelled widely, visiting Egypt (sailing there in 1874 in a yacht he built himself), Japan, India and Sri Lanka amongst many other countries, producing a number of paintings and drawings of the landscapes and people that he encountered. The present work undoubtedly originates from the artist's travels to Egypt. Two dhows—the traditional sailing vessels from Egypt, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and elsewhere in the Middle East, typically used for trade and goods transportation—are anchored on the shore of the Nile. Four more are visible on the river, beyond, in the pink and orange light that is softly diffused across the scene.
