Auguste Louis Veillon, Swiss 1834-1890- Figures resting by their tents in a desert, at sunset; pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, signed 'A Veillon' (lower left), 16.1 x 31.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Veillon worked withFrançois Diday (1802-1877) in his studio in Geneva before travelling to Paris, where he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts in 1858. It was here that he met Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), who introduced Veillon to the Orientalist approach for which he became particularly well-known. The present work is typical of Veillon's atmospheric and expansive sunset landscapes, and was undoubtedly informed by one of the artist's many trips to Egypt over the course of his career.
