European School, late 19th / early 20th century- View of the Acropolis in Athens; pencil and watercolour on paper, indistinctly signed 'V Roinar[?]' (lower right), 27.1 x 36.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel on a rocky hill above the city, containing the Parthenon and other important classical buildings. Most of the surviving structures date to the 5th century BC, constructed under Pericles. The Temple of Athena Nike can be seen in the upper right of the present work, set slightly apart from the main complex. It is possible that the artist of the present work is Victor Roinar (French school, 20th century) who produced a comparable view of Jerusalem which sold at Claude Aguttes, Paris, on 2 June 2008, lot 87.
