Circle of William Calcott Knell, British 1830-1880- Fishing boats off the coast; oil on canvas, bears partial old label with partially indistinct inscription 'Roma 623.9...[?] / L. Bartoluci[?]' attached to the upper stretcher bar, bears unidentified wax stamp attached to the upper stretcher bar, 46 x 61 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 5 October 1999, lot 23. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is highly reminiscent of the oeuvre of William Callcott Knell, the son of William Adolphus Knell (1805-1875) who, like his father, specialised in painting maritime scenes. Indeed, Knell's seascapes also exhibit the influence of earlier Dutch masters such as Simon de Vlieger (c.1601-1653) and Jan Porcellis (1580/84-1632). This scene recalls works by Knell in the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery [GV 1921.340] and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery [PRSMG : P1502].
