Provenance: (the first) with The Hanover Gallery, Edinburgh. (both) Private Collection, UK. Note: Sam Bough was an English-born landscape painter who worked in Scotland for most of his career. Although self-taught, he worked closely with a number of significant contemporaries, including painters Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882), who served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy, and Alexander Fraser (1827-1899). The present works demonstrate his interest in depicting a variety of landscape views. The forest landscape highlights his skill in capturing the texture and form of trees, while the harbour scene demonstrates his ability to depict dramatic skies. Indeed, similarly theatrical skies are depicted by the artist in works which sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 9 December 2021, lot 62 (£2,375) and on 5 December 2019, lot 30 (£1,875).
