George Barret Jnr., OWS, British 1767-1842- An Italianate pastoral landscape inspired by Villa Gregoriana and the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli; pencil and watercolor heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'George Barret 1820' (lower left), 33.3 x 48.5 cm. Provenance: with Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd., London. Private Collection, UK. Note: George Barret Jnr. was the son of Irish artist George Barret Snr. (1728/32-1784) and trained under him. From 1800 to 1803, his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He joined the Society of Painters in Watercolours shortly after its foundation in 1804, where he would exhibit for 38 consecutive years. His work was influenced by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), undisputed master of ruins, pastoral, and Italianate landscapes. The present work is influenced by the paysagist tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries, and it includes a construction inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, and a cascade inspired by Villa Gregoriana; two common motifs of landscape painting in these centuries.
