Thomas Ender, Austrian 1793-1875- A hunter and an elderly woman on an Alpine path; oil on canvas, signed 'Th Ender' (lower right), 42.6 x 36.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Ender studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna along with his twin brother Johann Nepomuk Ender (1793-1854), and studied there under the landscape painters Laurenz Janscha (1749-1812) and Joseph Mössmer (1780-1845). He later served as court painter to Archduke John of Austria (1782-1859), accompanying him on trips to the Middle East and Southern Russia in 1837, after which he became a Professor at the Academy in Vienna. The present work is a charming example of Ender's striking Alpine views, with similar mountain landscapes including his painting which sold at Im Kinsky, Vienna, on 7 July 2021, lot 1252 (€32,000 hammer), and another Italianate vista selling in the same rooms on 13 November 2012, lot 121 (€35,000).
