William Simson, Scottish 1800-1847- View of a tranquil wooded river landscape, with a fisherman's items lying on the bank in the foreground, and a heron beyond; oil on canvas, possibly indistinctly signed (lower left), 50.9 x 68.8 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work recalls Simson's expressive, windswept landscapes, and bears a particularly striking resemblance to his river landscape in the collection of the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture [1995.102], which also features a distinctive lone heron on the river bank. Other similar views, characterised by loose brushstrokes which impart his work with a sense of spontaneity, are held in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland [NG 308; NG 533; NG 368].
