Attributed to Thomas Christopher Hofland, British 1777-1843- A View from Richmond Hill; oil on canvas, 76 x 122.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Hofland was largely self-taught, although he received some instruction from the landscape painter John Rathbone (c.1750-1807). He travelled extensively throughout Britain, and the Thames, particularly around Richmond and Twickenham became a recurring subject in his oeuvre. The present work depicts a view from Richmond Hill and is comparable with another view from Richmond Hill, c.1837, in the Richmond Borough Art Collection at Orleans House Gallery [LDORL: 00189], which shows the same stretch of the Thames. Hofland lived nearby in Montpelier Row, and the view would have been familiar to him. In both works, the wooded grounds of Marble Hill are visible, with the small white building known as Little Marble Hill on the distant bank. Hofland exhibited 72 works at the Royal Academy and was a founding member of the Society of British Artists.
