Follower of John Constable, RA, British 1776-1837- Landscape with figures crossing a bridge beneath stormy skies; oil on panel, 18.1 x 23.1 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to derive from David Lucas’s mezzotint after Constable’s Summer Afternoon after a Shower, a version of which is in the collection of the British Museum [1846,0130.8] and another in the collection of the V&A [E.1102:19-2016]. It follows the print in depicting the same windmill, church spire and figure on horseback, albeit with notable differences and an enlargement of certain features, like the windmill. The print formed part of Constable’s celebrated series 'English Landscape', comprising 22 mezzotints executed by Lucas between 1830 and 1832 after selected works by Constable.
