Follower of Thomas Gainsborough, RA FRSA, British 1727-1788- A figure in a horse-drawn cart and a figure on foot with his dog on a path in a landscape, with cattle watering beyond; oil on canvas, 59.8 x 80.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work recalls Gainsborough's distinctive landscapes, which themselves were influenced by earlier generations of Netherlandish painters working in Italy in the 17th century, known as the Bamboccianti, including Jan Both (1610/18-1652) and Karel Dujardin (1626-1678). This is particularly evident in the merging of the Italianate and Dutch traditions, populating the expansive and dramatic landscape with pastoral elements, especially cattle. This painting resembles a landscape by Gainsborough in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland [NG 2253], as well as another which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 5 July 2023, lot 44.
