Continental School, c.1800- An extensive Italianate landscape with the calling of Cincinnatus from the plough; oil on canvas, 157.4 x 202.5 cm. (Import Duty Charged on the Hammer Price). Provenance: Property from Ardbraccan House, Ireland. Note: The subject is taken from Livy,Ab Urbe Condita, III:26. The story of Cincinnatus, a Roman consul who was highly praised for his brave military career and his modest life style, is often used as a moral example of ancient Roman virtue. Cincinnatus is shown here after his retirement, when he became a farmer. When in a time of crisis he was recalled to a temporary leadership, he immediately took up this job and became a dictator for fifteen days, before returning to his farm again. The present composition is very much in the vein of the sweeping Italianate landscapes of 17th-century artists such as Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) and Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665).
