Circle of Claude-Joseph Vernet, French 1714-1789- Boats and classical ruins in an Italianate landscape; oil on canvas, 71.5 x 95 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is reminiscent of Vernet’s dramatic harbour scenes. with the Classical architecture and rippling sails of the boat imparting the work with a strong sense of theatricality. Vernet was particularly celebrated for his Italianate landscapes and marine paintings, which were often imbued with a sense of drama. He spent much of his career in Rome, where he absorbed the traditions of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675) and Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), before returning to France and receiving an important royal commission for a series of views of the ports of France, which he executed between 1753 and 1765. Comparable works by Vernet have sold at Christie’s, Paris, on 11 June 2025, lot 36 (€75,600), and on 21 November 2024, lot 32 (€239,400).
