Circle of Gavin Hamilton, British 1723-1798- James Dawkins and Robert Wood discovering the ruins of Palmyra; oil on canvas, 64 x 75.5 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: This is a version an original by Gavin Hamilton held at the National Galleries of Scotland [NG 2666]. The present lot may have been part of the process of making the print after Hamilton's composition that was published by John Hall in 1773-1775. In 1773 Hamilton's picture was inaccessible and too large to reproduce as an engraving, so a smaller version would probably have been needed.
