After Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA, British 1723-1792- The Age of Innocence; oil on canvas, 76.2 x 63.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a copy after Reynolds's original painting in the collection of the Tate Britain [N00307]. The sitter is unknown, but has been identified as possibly Reynolds’s great-niece, Theophila Gwatkin (1757-1848), or Lady Anne Spencer (1773-1865), youngest daughter of the 4th Duke of Marlborough. It was painted over another Reynolds work and only the hands remain in their original state. The original painting was presented to the National Gallery in 1847 by Robert Vernon (1774-1849) and has been on display at Tate Britain since 1951.
