Circle of François-Hubert Drouais, French 1727-1775- Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, holding a copy of ‘L’esprit de loix’; oil on canvas, 67 x 52.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work bears similarities to Drouais's portraits of elegant gentlemen, recalling comparable works by Drouais which have sold at Christie's, New York, on 12 February 2026, lot 227, and on 8 June 2011, lot 61. 'De l'esprit des loix', also known in English as 'The Spirit of the Laws', is a treatise on political theory and a pioneering work of comparative law by Montesquieu (1689-1755), first published in 1748.
