After Pieter Casteels III, Flemish 1684-1789- A peacock and other exotic birds in an an elaborate parkland setting; oil on canvas, 76 x 102 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is characteristic of Casteels's depictions of exotic birds in garden settings, and appears to have been based on an original painting of the same composition which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 11 January 1996, lot 4, by Casteels, which had previously been attributed to the circle of Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636-1695). Born in Antwerp, Casteels settled permanently in England around 1717, where he established a successful practice as a painter of flowers and birds. Many of these works were produced for decorative schemes, serving as overdoors and chimney-pieces.
