After Pieter Casteels III, Flemish 1684-1789- A peacock, peahen, guinea fowl, a jay, and other birds with a spaniel, a weasel, a lizard, and a butterfly in a parkland setting; oil on canvas, 92 x 122 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to be a copy after a painting by Casteels which sold at Christie's, London, on 9 December 1994, lot 3. Another version of the same composition has also been offered by Sotheby's, London, on 28 October 1987, lot 56, as by Tobias Stranover (1684-1756). Born in Antwerp, Casteels settled permanently in England around 1717, where he established a successful practice as a painter of flowers and birds. Many of these works were produced for decorative schemes, serving as overdoors and chimney-pieces.
