Follower of Jan Lievens, Dutch 1607-1674- Two drawings of the Apostles: St Matthew; and St Luke; each pen, black ink, and grey wash on laid paper, the first inscribed 'S Mat.teus' (lower centre) and dated '16.92.' (lower left), the second inscribed 'S. Lucas' (lower centre) and dated '16.92.' (lower left), the first with indistinct watermark to the right edge, the first 17.4 x 14.6 cm., the second 18.2 x 14.6 cm., two (2), (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, Italy. Private Collection, Australia. Note: The present works undoubtedly derive from Jan Lievens' drawings of the 'Four Evangelists', after which a set of etchings were produced which have been attributed to Laurent de la Hyre (1606-1656). The confident handling here furthermore exhibits a clear debt to Lievens' distinctive approach, particularly in the bold hatching which is evident in many of his studies. See, for example, his 'Bearded man looking up to the right' which appeared at Christie's, New York, on 24 January 2001, lot 169, and his 'Sleeping woman' which sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, on 15 November 1994, lot 42.
