After Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Dutch 1606-1669- Self-portrait; oil on paper laid down on canvas, 47.1 x 39.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is clearly informed by Rembrandt's distinctive self-portraits, bearing a striking resemblance to a self-portrait which Rembrandt completed in 1660, at the age of 54, and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art [14.40.618], as well as his 'Self Portrait at the Age of 63' in the collection of the National Gallery, London [NG221]. The present painting conveys the deeply contemplative air which characterises Rembrandt's later self-portraits.
