Provenance: Chamberlain Christer Bonde af Björnö (1869-1956) and his wife Julia Ekestubbe (1875-1957), Teleborg castle, Växjö. Note: Van Helmont's scenes of figures gambling, smoking, and drinking in taverns are undoubtedly heavily inspired by those of Dutch contemporaries such as David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) and Adriaen Brouwer (c.1605-1638). The present interior recalls a composition by van Helmont which sold at Hampel, Munich, on 9 December 2021, lot 393 (€5,440), or another which sold at Christie's, London, on 23 April 2008, lot 21 (£6,375).
