Circle of Bartolomeo Torreggiani, Italian 1590-c.1675- Figures resting in an Italianate mountainous landscape; oil on canvas, 49 x 57.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is highly reminiscent of the evocative Italianate landscapes by Torreggiani, a sophisticated landscape painter who was a pupil of Salvator Rosa (1615-1673). Torreggiani's distinctive approach was influenced by Rosa's dramatic treatment of nature and Claude Lorrain's (1600-1682) mastery of light, resulting in landscapes characterised by a strong sense of drama. Indeed, comparable landscapes by Torreggiani include examples sold at Christie's, London, on 9 July 2008, lot 125, and at William Doyle, New York, on 25 October 2006, lot 2091.
