Michiel Carrée, Dutch 1657-1727- Wooded landscape with cattle; oil on panel, indistinctly signed 'M[?]f' (lower right), bears indistinct trace of an old wax stamp, 42 x 30.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Note: Born in The Hague into a family of painters, Carrée first trained with his brother Hendrik. He is reported to have lived in Haarlem, while studying under landscape painter Nicholaes Berchem (1620-1683). According to painter and biographer Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719), Carrée is thought to have lived in England, where he did not have success. He returned to the Netherlands until he was invited to the Berlin Court in 1697. He was appointed private painter to King of Prussia Frederick I from 1702 to the monarch's death in 1713. Aside of producing easel paintings, Carrée was known for his work as a mural painter, who decorated halls and salons. 'Wooded Landscape with Cattle', painted in 1685 and held at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, is a compelling comparison with the present work.
