Manner of Jan Dirksz Both, late 18th / early 19th century- Two figures, one on horseback, with their cattle on a path in an Italianate landscape; oil on panel, 24.1 x 20.9 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work exhibits the influence of Both (1615/18-1652), a hugely influential and prolific painter of Dutch Italianate landscapes which were characterised by their distinctive combination of dramatic, mountainous vistas, occupied by imposing ruins, and with the rustic figures and cattle of the Dutch pastoral tradition. The present work is heavily reminiscent of Both's idealised and highly atmospheric landscapes, suffused with a warm light which renders the scene particularly evocative. Similar compositions by Both include a work which was offered at Hampel, Munich, on 28 September 2023, lot 837, or another which sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 24 April 2018, lot 115.
