Follower of Sebastiano del Piombo, Italian 1485-1547- The Visitation; oil on canvas, 106.5 x 83 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present picture appears to be inspired by an oil by Sebastiano del Piombo, which is in the collection of the Louvre [INV 358]. It depicts the visitation, when Mary, newly pregnant with Christ, travelled from Nazareth to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was six months pregnant with John the Baptist. The subject was also treated by Mariotto Albertinelli (1474-1515), whose visitation is in the collction of the Uffizi, Florence [1890 no. 1587], and Federico Barocci (c. 1535-1612), whose version is in Santa Maria in Vallicella (Chiesa Nuova), Rome.
