After Raphaello Sanzio da Urbino, called Raphael, Italian 1483-1520- Madonna della Sedia; oil on canvas, feigned oval, 24 x 19.1 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a copy after Raphael's original composition, also known as the 'Madonna della Seggiola', in the collection of the Palazzo Pitti, Florence [1912 n.151]. This is one of the artist's most celebrated and enduring images, conveying a palpable sense of the Madonna's maternal affection for the Christ Child, whilst also exhibiting Raphael's distinctive embrace of the tondo format. The present composition excludes the figure of John the Baptist who is depicted in the right of the original composition.
