Follower of Guido Reni, Italian 1575-1642- The infant Christ sleeping on the cross; oil on canvas, bears inscribed label on the reverse, 55 x 62 cm. Provenance: Robert Norris. Sold at Cheltenham, 11 June 1863. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present picture appears to be inspired by an oil by Guido Reni, a copy of which is in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool [WAG 2801]. It is also related to Cristofano Allori’s (1577-1621) Christ Asleep on the Cross, held in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, and to an oil of the same subject by Francesco Albani (1578-1660), sold at the Earl of Yarborough Sale, Christie’s, London, 12 July 1929, lot 6. The full-length, recumbent sleeping child is depicted draped in translucent cloth and lying upon a wooden cross. A very similar work, with minor differences, was sold at Phillips, London, 15 December 1998, lot 217.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
