Russian school; 19th century. “Saint Nicholas.” Tempera on panel. Measurements: 36 x 30 x 3 cm. This work is an interesting example of 19th-century Russian iconographic tradition, following the models established by the icon painting of ancient Russia. It depicts Saint Nicholas of Myra, one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Christian tradition, characterized by his long white beard and solemn episcopal vestments. The saint is depicted in a half-length portrait, adorned with the regalia befitting his dignity as a bishop, holding the Gospel in one hand while making the traditional gesture of blessing with the other. The figure’s frontal pose, serene expression, and the hieratic nature of the composition reflect the fundamental principles of Orthodox iconography. The use of a subdued color palette and the schematic depiction of facial features accentuate the spiritual nature of the image, conceived not merely as a representation of the saint, but as an object of devotion and contemplation. Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, was one of the most popular figures in the Byzantine world and is especially venerated in Russia, where his cult achieved extraordinary popularity.
