JOAQUIM BUSQUETS GRUART (Sabadell, 1930–2011). “Waiting for the Catch,” 1997. Oil on panel. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 30 x 30 cm; 53 x 53 cm (frame). A Catalan painter trained at the Industrial School of Arts and Crafts in Sabadell, Joaquim Busquets Gruart initially combined his artistic work with his career in graphic arts. A student of Manuel Rallo, he developed a primarily figurative style, focusing on landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, and religious themes. Beginning in the late 1970s, he maintained an active exhibition career in Sabadell and Barcelona. Among his most distinctive projects is the “Abecedari dels estils de la pintura moderna i contemporània,” a collection of twenty-six works in which he reinterpreted the same view of Venice using different artistic styles from art history. He also created various religious and monumental paintings in Catalan churches. Closely tied to the cultural life of Sabadell, his work is characterized by technical mastery, the figurative tradition, and a constant interest in the various styles of modern painting.
