Mid-20th-century Spanish school. “Coastal Landscape,” 1954. Oil on panel. Signed and dated “J. Montfort” in the lower right corner. The frame shows some loss of polychrome. Measurements: 22 x 32 cm; 36 x 44 cm (frame). Light and intense color contrast are the defining hallmarks of this landscape with a Mediterranean feel, where traditional buildings and a porch with white pillars stand out against the deep blue of the sea. The ochres and oranges of the architecture, combined with the greens of the vegetation, convey the warmth of the coastal setting. A loose, impasto brushstroke with a distinctly expressive character builds the forms through broad patches of color, lending freshness and immediacy to the scene. The composition draws on the tradition of Post-Impressionist landscape painting, attentive to the effects of light and the artist’s personal interpretation of nature.
