AGUSTÍ PUIG PINYOL (Sabadell, Barcelona, 1957). Untitled, 1990. Mixed media and collage on corrugated cardboard. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 40 x 56 cm; 54 x 70.5 cm (frame). Collage occupies a particularly interesting place within Agustí Puig Pinyol’s artistic experimentation; he conceives the surface of the work as a space constructed through successive layers of material. Paint, paper, cardboard, fabric, and occasionally fragments of wood are superimposed and integrated with the drawing and the painterly gesture, lending his compositions a marked tactile richness. Far from using collage for purely decorative purposes, Puig transforms each added material into an active part of the image, creating figures and objects through cutouts, overlays, and attached elements. Schematic silhouettes, spontaneous graphic elements, and a palette dominated by blacks, whites, earth tones, and reddish hues reinforce the primitive and expressive character of these works, in which the boundaries between painting, drawing, collage, and object are deliberately blurred. Agustí Puig trained at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis de Sabadell, the Escola Massana, and the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. In 1985, he received the fourth honorable mention in the Joan Miró International Drawing Prize. His work is included in the collections of the Fundació Vila Casas, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Tarragona, among others.
